Does anyone know how to get discounts on hardware and software that make it economically feasible to build your own systems? Is this a vendor only perk? I have been looking on sites like compgeeks, and ebay, but if I built the system I want at those prices, I might as well get a Dell. I have known people in the past that could get computer parts at a fraction of the cost, but have since lost contact with them. Any help would be appreciated.

@BryanZ - unfortunately not, as I am located further on South (Stuttgart area) and have no contacts to the Frankfurt area... but I'll keep my eyes open... one thing you could check though are local Computer stores, as they sometimes have sales and might be cheaper than statesside... Arlt.com for instance has a store here:

Mainzer Landstraße 187
60327 Frankfurt a.M

btw. a pre-built systems from DELL (cheapest) Dimension 4700 Medium, goes for 499 € ($665) wich includes a 2.8ghz P4 520, 80gb HD, 256mb DDR2 Mem, Integrated Intel Graphics, Microsoft Works 7.0, Windows XP Home...
