Hardrive Errors and Chkdsk problem 2

I had to run chkdsk a few weeks ago for something and now I don't know how to shut it off. It runs every time I reboot and it can never access the drive.

My second issue is I am getting a message saying a problem has been detected with the harddrive, consult owner's manual. Press enter to continue.

When I pressed enter I got a black screen that only sayid Press <F4> to RUN SETUP, but pressing it or any other key did nothing. This went on all day today.

I finally gave up, left it alone for hours, tried it one more time and it worked. The chkdsk is still running though, and I'm afraid whatever problem occurred today with the hard drive will happen again.

If you do not have a backup of your data make one as soon as you can first off.

Use the drive mfg's utils or your favorite app to check drive health.

Not sure of the loop that you are in where chkdsk is running repeatedly, but if it does not complete this will happen.

I using xp you can run chkdsk from the repair console see:

Well it seems I have another problem now. My virtual memory is gone. It happened to be my secondary hard drive that was the problem as with it unhooked the PC was running fine. But then my memory wen kaputz. It's only a 28gig hd (the secondary was 80gigs) on XP and I only have about 7gigs free, so I'm guessing I've just used it all up?

I am only able to open one program at a time (like a browser or word processor) and can't even open programs like Photoshop or Illustrator. Should I just purchase more memory (and how much?) or a new hard drive (80gig or 160gig if so?)?

Just to let you know I do a lot of work with Photoshop and Illustrator as well as occasional web design. Thanks for your help.

And just another question on the secondary hard drive (the 80gig one) as well.

With it plugged in either as the secondary or primary drive the computer won't go into Windows at all.

It will show my Gateway screen, then I get a message saying a problem has been detected with the harddrive, consult owner's manual. Press enter to continue.

So is that something that can be fixed and my data saved, or am I just going to lose all that data?

If someone doesn't answer soon I'm gonna have to go plop down $100 for a new hard drive even if that's not the problem just to get the thing working. You guys have always been super helpful to me. Please Respond!

Sounds like your secondary drive may have bit the dust. Try replacing it and see if that fixes the problem. (Of course it could be the cable, or even possibly the controller). If chkdsk took a long time, you have some big problems. Hope you back up important files!

You could also down load the manufacturer's low level format program. Expand it to a folder and read the directions (you'll need a blank, formatted floppy). Then run the program. CAUSTION: This CAN BE/IS a destructive operation. But from the sounds of it, your drive is dead anyways. You MAY get your drive back and working, or you may get error messages when you boot.

I had a drive fail. The boot sector went bad. I d/l'ed the low level format program and was able to reformat, and reload Win Xp. Unfortunetly, now I get an error message about a parameter being out of range, what ever that is.

Also, chkdsk doesn't take a long time, it just says it can't access the drive.
