My harddrive is an IBM 120GXP 80 gig. It's about 1.5 year old. About a month ago it started producing a hightone sound going up and down. It's very annoying and it's the second time it happens for me with IBM harddrives.

Is there anyone that recognize this problem and what could cause the tone?

I have two harddrives one located about 1 cm above the other. Is this too little(not enough ventilation)?

And do all harddrives produce notable noise coming from spinning the disc?

I think those IBM drives have a very high failure rate. I'd back up my data and buy a new drive ASAP.

I had a 60 gig one die on me last year and I lost everything that wasn't backed-up.

If I get a new one(warranty maybe) do you have any tip on how to make the HD last longer?

Before you decide to trust your data to another IBM drive search on "GXP failure" at google.

I have only bought WD and Maxtor drives since my IBM GXPs died. A WD Caviar WD1200JB 80GB "Special Edition" can be had for under $90, or a 120GB for under $110.

Personally, I'd rather spend an extra $100 than waste several hours putting in failed drive after failed drive.

Yep, I'm done with IBM for now. :)
Hope I can backup all before something happens.

I need a really quiet one. I have a new Western Digital but I think my friends HDs are more quiet...
