Hard Drive temperature 250 C, moves up and down

Hello guys,
I have a weird situation with my hard drive, the temperature goes from 55 to 253 C, with no reason.
I used three softwares to figure out what's going on:HDD Life, HDD thermometer and Speed fan.

All these softwares allow you to see HDD temperature but all of them are telling me that temperature is too high, when I physically touch the HD it is not that hot.
If I turn off my PC then it is really hard to turn it on, it just turns on the HP splash screen and it stops there, I cannot even access BIOS.

So to my understanding the temp. it is not that hot physically but the software or firmware the gives/sends those information is not working properly.

Does anyone have any idea who controls those info.? Is BIOS? Because I am thinking to flash BIOS but I have no idea who controls temp. information so I can do something about.

Any help would be really appreciated.

I find it hard to believe that it is 253 C as that converts to 482 degres F, it would by on fire. you must have a faulty sencor.

A BIOS flash would be a good place to start. As mentioned, there is NO WAY the temperature of the HDD is 250!!

So you think BIOS is providing that information about temp. which is way too high, and cannot be that high because it would get on fire, but also I am touching the HDD and it's not that hot.

Any other idea except BIOS who controls those information?

If you are using software to measure the temperature, it may not be able to read the temp accurately. Try a diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's web site. Sometimes they can measure the hard drive temp or tell you if the drive has been hotter than it should be. Here are some of the links for different hard drive manufacturers. If there is no evidence that it has been running hot, don't worry about it.

Those utilities utilize the S.M.A.R.T. data from a drive. I agree that it has to be a bad sensor, but I have no clue how to repair or replace one.

If you can find a setting in your BIOS to turn S.M.A.R.T. on or off then turning it off might help.

Agreed with Wahnula that if several pieces of software report a wrong temperature, it's not likely the software, it's the hardware (sensor) sending the data. Updating the BIOS will NOT fix the problem if it's a sensor, but then again updating the BIOS to the latest current version is a good idea, so it couldn't hurt unless you try to flash the wrong BIOS.

If you're not sure, don't flash it!!!! I found that out the hard way 1 time

I agree with goombawaho because I talked to HP support and they suggested me not to use other software because they might report data incorrectly.

Ayway I guess for now I will try to work like this and ignore the temp. readings, because in reality the HDD is not that hot.

And in meantime I will save some money to buy an external HDD during Christmas deals, hoping to find a 3.5" HDD with 500 GB or more with less than 100.00 $. I am close but not slim one 3.5", I found some bulky ones.
