I bought separately a Maxtor Diamond 250 Gb hard drive and an external USB2 enclosure and had them put together by the retailer. I noticed a very annoying thing with the operation of this drive: sometimes it starts normally, and I can access all the files no problem. Sometimes it makes kind of a squeaky/screechy sound and hangs bringing the laptop to a standstill altogether. I know this is suppose to signal a mechanical fault. I tried chkdsk, scandisk, de-fragmenting, Maxtor's and Western Digital's utilities and all of them tell me there's no problem with the drive. No bad sectors, no file system problem, no SMART problem. What is wrong? I'm running nuts.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately I am now in Britain and the retailer that I bought the thing from is in Canada with no representatives here. I can't send it back to Maxtor either coz their diagnostic software doesn't give an error code. Any other suggestions?

You might like to try & hang this off as slave to another master HDD on a different PC and see if you can read/write to it, if so, maybe the HDD enclosure components are suspect. (don't forget to change the jumper)

If IT ain’t working Binnit and Reboot

Just because Maxtor's diagnostic software gives the drive a clean bill of health, it doesn't mean you can't send it back if it has a fault, albeit intermittent.

If you've taken the drive out of the USB enclosure and you can make it produce the fault hooking it up directly into another computer, I'd certainly demand an RMA.
