I WAS TRYING TO DO A DATA TRANSFER FROM A WESTERN DIGITAL TO A NEW MAXTOR. DURING THE PROCESS I DISCOVERED THE WESTERN DIGITAL CONTAINED A VIRUS...WITHOUT TRANSFERRING THE VIRUS TO THE NEW HARD DRIVE..I STOPPED ALL WORK...ANOTHER TECH PROCEEDED TO TROUBLESHOOT THE ISSUE...HIS SOLUTION WAS TO STILL DO THE DATA TRANSFER AND AFTER IT WAS COMPLETE TO DO A FULL VIRUS SCAN HOWEVER, HE SAID HE DISCOVERED A DOS OVERLAY ON THE MAXTOR..THE TECH REMOVED THE ORIGINAL WESTERN AND PLACED IT INTO A TEST CPU WAS NOT ABLE TO SEE THE OPERATING SYSTEM...ONLY THE DOS PARTITIONS...MY QUESTION TO YOU IS WHAT HAPPENED TO THE OS? AND THE TECH STATED THE MAXTOR HAD A DOS OVERLAY ON IT.WHAT IS THIS? AND HOW DO I PROCEED WITH TRYING TO GET THE DATA TRANSFERRED?

Well, DDO's (dynamic drive overlay's) were prevelant back when the hard drives were getting bigger and we only had DOS and Win 3.x which couldn't see anything larger than 2GB FAT partitions.

The DDO should have little or NO bearing on data transfer to another hard drive, it is merely a bit of date written so that the data over 2GB could be handled by the OS.

As for what happened to your OS, I am unsure what your "tech" did, or what kind of PC he is trying to look on, therefore it's hard for me to guess.

If you have a little more information maybe we could help you a little more.

Cheers!

jni - can you type in normal case please - using CAPS is considered to be 'shouting'! Thanks

Edemier thank you for responding so quickly, you have been very informative about DDO's. As for the problem the os was there when I finished..how is it we are able to see the partitions but not the os...do you think tech may have erased the os by mistake..

Thank you wolluf, I will try to remeber that information..I'm new to the forum...
