I'm building a mini server and I wanted to know about some hard drives.

What I want to know which drives are better.

Maxtor? I've heard some good and bad things about them that averages about 50/50. personally I haven't had any problems with Maxtor.

Seagate? some of my friends swear by them. they said that they have the best drives ever.

Western Digital? for me they were the first drives i've ever tried and they are a name in the industry. I haven't used them in a while so I want to know if they've changed.

What do you think?

well, the same could maybe be said of the IBM's that are getting a bad rap in this thread?

Yes and no. With IBM there were, as paparazi pointed out, specific h drives that were bad. It was so bad that people starting calling the IBM Deckstar line the deathstar.
Actually it was only certain drives, i think even from a certain factory in Asia If i recall. The rest were ok.
But it hurt IBM's rep. When i said i avoid them i should have stated i avoid the older 30 to 60 gig units. I know the problem was corrected and IBM drives are fine now. For me, its just that i got that in my mind and avoided IBM drives for quite a while. I belong to a few forums that buy\sell\trade pc hardware. For a while you couldnt give a deckstar away. But some people knew exactly which drives were affected and posted the info. Thats why i remember this.
Another was Fujitsu, not 100% sure on that, and i think it was, again, somewhere around the 30 to 60 gig drives only. It was found out, at the time, that Fujitsu started warning their larger customers in advance and offering to replace certain drives. The smaller customers found out and the cat was out of the bag.
With IBM and other companies buying each other out i got confused so i just stopped buying these drives for a while. I guess i should have been more clear on that, but didnt want to take up so much space like i am doing now, lol.
All this can be verified using google, by the way, at least i would imagine so. And i am using my memory, which is sometimes faulty, but i am pretty sure i have it down right, or very close. Over the years, i have read a lot about these 2 situations.
