Hard Drive not recognized

I just put my Zune HDD into an external enclosure. Windows recognizes that it's there in the "safely remove hardware" thing. But won't be recognized under my computer. How do I get into the drive to format for use

What version of Windows is this? Does it show up in Computer Management under the Storage section? For specific instructions on how to get there we'll need your windows version.

Why are you wanting to format it did something happen to it?

Well it used to be my Zune HDD and I just wanted to make it into a portable HDD , because my Zune battery doesnt worry anymore.

and I'm running Windows XP, and I have a Vista box in the house that won't recognize it either.

For XP Right Click on My Computer -> Manage -> Scroll down to Storage.

It should show up there if its correctly recognized. But not formatted in something Windows can read, or it just didn't get a Drive letter assinged.

Form there you can format it, and/or assign it a drive letter if it needs one.

If its not there then either there's a problem with the hard drive, or the enclosure.

Under storage there were options for disk defrag, removable storage, and disk managment. I don't see it under there at all. But under the Device manager I see 811 ATA/ATAPI Device USB Device. Which wasn't there before

Go into Disk Management, it should list the drives attached to the machine, one of them should be the Zune drive

Sadly nothing but my Laptop HDD, and it's partitions. ugh guess the drives no good, and wasted $15 on a enclosure?

The enclosure lights up when plugged in, and I think that 811 ATA device in the enclosure

A few thoughts...

Can you hear if the hard drive is spinning up? Maybe with the external USB HDD casing open, you could at least feel if it's vibrating slightly.

Is this USB enclose drawing all its power via a single USB port. Some external USB cases either provide a second USB connector for power, or give you a mains PSU. Describe the scenario for yours - it could be the unit is just not getting enough power...

You mentioned 'laptop'. Do you have a desktop machine? If yes, it might be worth opening the case of the desktop and seeing if you can attach the hard drive directly to one of the motherboard interfaces, IDE, SATA, what ever it is you have. Now look in Disk Management as per Vacunita's post...
