I have an older computer with a P6BAT-A+ Mainboard motherboard.

I am running Windows 98and I want to reinstall W98, but use a new 40GB Western digital WD400 Caviar Enhanced IDE hard drive.

The hard drive that is currently in the computer is maybe a 6GB if that sounds right.

The problem is that the computer will not recognize the 40GB hard drive during startup. It says there is no hard drive installed.

Does my motherboard have a limitation and if so do you know what the limit is. Or is there some other reason for the problem

The BIOS maybe has a 32Gb limit. With luck your drive may have a capacity limiting jumper setting. Carefully check the label on the drive, or if nothing indicated, go to drive manufacturer's website.

It's possible, but unlikely, that the motherboard manufacturer has a BIOS upgrade that will accept drives greater than 32Gb to be recognised.

Thanks for the info Roger.

the wd 400 afik no limitation jumper, but thats not the prob. even if the limitations apply, the pc should recognize the hdd. check cabeling/jumper, can u hear the drive spinning up?

Yes, the most important suggestion here is to check the jumper and cable position.

Try the new 40GB drive with the jumper setting as slave connected to the same cable as the old hard drive. Make sure that the master is connected on the end and the slave is using the middle connector. If that doesn't work, make the 40GB master on the secondary IDE channel.

On a side note, I have no idea why you are sticking with 98 unless your hardware is way outdated.
