Hard Drive no giving back space... 1

Hi,

The problem is with my second hard drive, a WD 80 gb. I don't use it for anything besides downloading video clips and such so there are no windows components or anything installed on it. Recently, I deleted a folder with 6 gbs worth of video and I did not get any free space back. When I select all the folders in the driver it adds up to 68 gbs. When I check the drive via the right lick menu it says i've used up 74 gbs. Plz help, thanks in advance.

PS> I've had this problem once before also and in about a week, my free space magically apeared overnight.

Nope, it's too big for the recycle bin so Windows permantly deletes it

Ok - (recycle bin defaults to 10% of drive I think, which would be 8GB - so thought it possible).

Hidden & system files showing?

Should the drive be completely empty?

Does the recycle bin take up 10% of the non-windows drive too?

Yes, everything is showing and DISKdata also shows that i have used up 74 gbs...very strange indeed

You can set % for recycle bin individually on each partition, but if you don't change the default setting, its 10% for each drive - just right click on it and view its properties.

ah, i see, do you think i need Norton Protection at all for this drive?

What for? (sorry, apart from Ghost, I avoid Norton tools and utilities, as have not had very good experiences with them. Also, I can't see why you need more than what XP (assuming you're running XP) already provides to manage a drive you only keep data on. Btw - have you tried running chkdsk /F on the drive (sometimes an index can be corrupted, so deleted filestore isn't 'returned' as free space. chkdsk should sort that out.

i ran the checkdisk but had no luck...perhaps i need to wait another week and hope for it to magically appear

Here's the solution (I had the same problem)
Your Norton Recycle bin is keeping/hiding the files you delete from you and thus isn't giving you back your hard drive space when you delete your files.
To remedy this, right mouse click on your recycle bin, click properties and click the norton protection tab.
From there select your drive in the dropdown and click empty protected files. You may even want to disable the protection on that drive to keep this from happening again.

Protected files:
Just as when you delete files, they aren't really deleted - "Norten Protected Files" keeps a copy of ALL deleted files for possible recovery. It also keeps a copy of boot-up files that would normally be deleted at next boot. I empty my "Protected Files" every week.
