60Gb IBM Deathstar secondary drive died on me. I heard groaning noises, mostly on start ups for a few weeks. I was to broke fixing a car to replace it in time!

The controller card looks pretty easy to replace. The motor I am not so sure about. I know exposing the platters to other than a clean room is pointless.

If I attempt to replace the motor will that expose the platters?

Anyone know of a good website I can edumacate myself some? Would help a lot if I could see what it's insides look like. I have been searching the internet for a couple of days with no success.

I do not have the funds to send this HD to a data recovery company.

I just pulled apart a Samsung hard drive, and the motor is a direct connection to the platters. If your drive is the same, it looks hopeless.

I have a 'good' Deathstar 20Gb in front of me and this one looks easyish...4 screws and a clip holding the 'cellophane' connector to the motor.

Generally, the screws that hold the motors lock down from the top, under the bottom platter.
So you are going to need the case, platters, and heads off to get it out.

I hope we're not talking of removing the platters! Sorry, misread the Q! I was referring to the controller board.

Andy.

Google 'IBM Deathstar' as my recollection is that it is not motor failure, but a plating of the media that is the issue.
