Hi all - My PC has 2 hard drives - Normally C (contains my OS - XP) and D, (and DVD is E) right? But when I switched out C for a new hard drive, the letters are now backwards - My main OS drive is now E and 2nd drive is C (backwards right? I don't like it!) I didn't change any thing in the cables either (slave, master stuff) - My question is how can I reconfigure these letters so my XP shows on C drive and 2nd drive is D drive - and Dvd is E where it all should be. Make sense? This isnt an issue with one of those pitiful little plastic jumper thingys is it? Thank you!

When you install XP, as in your case, make sure that the ONLY drive attached is the one you want to install it on...

once finished, go to the Drive Management and change the Drive Letter for the DVD to E: (as it magically became D:), power down and add the other drive, which should now become D: ...

so this means its not fixable unless I re-install XP with slave drive disconnected? thank you

In XP, right click on My Computer, choose Manage, the Storage, then Disk Management. Try rearranging the drive letters there. It may be easier than you think.

I wouldn't do that. Windows is set up to find everything in E: now, change that to c: and you are just asking for trouble.

That technique works when you want to change the drive letter of a non system disc.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Vacunita, quite right with that...

as everything in the REGISTRY is pointing to the E drive and changing that to C, will break the OS to where it does not know where what is...

there is a way, but it is more of a headache for a regular user, and since it was a fresh install to begin with, the simplest way would be to reinstall it...

How to restore the system/boot drive letter in Windows

Agree with Ben & Phil, just cut your losses and reinstall with only one drive connected. Store the time spent under "lessons learned".

Ok thanks for the headsup guys - I guess im stuck with system drive :E and crapola drive: C Just assbackwards huh? I hate reinstalling XP unless I HAVE to. lol!

dvk1,

Just in case you weren't at all clear on the situation with the drive letters...

Here's the basic rule:
If Windows is installed on the drive letter you want to change, then you can't change it without reinstalling Windows (unless I suppose you just WANT to dig into the registry for I don't know - 10 years? [wink])

However, for any other drive letters, those CAN be handled under disk management, which was mentioned by at least 2 different people.
