i am having a problem with a seagate 40GB hard drive(ST340823A),it is not new and used 2 work fine. When i put it in it is detected in the bios and when XP boots up it show that it has detected a new disk drive. When i go into my computer the drive is not ther but when i go into device manager it is there. I ahve tried restarting, changing the jumper setttings, the ide cable but still no luck.
What is the cause of this? How can it be fixed?
Thanx

Go to my computer, right click, manage, disk management, right click and format it.

i cant format it, it has mostly all my stuff on it
is there no other way?

You need to be looking for drive recovery tools.
There is a "General data recovery discussion" forum that might be of some interest to you.

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

You didnt say that you had data on the drive you wanted to save.

Try slaving it on another computer, that might do it.
Or even put it in an external firewire or usb box if you have one.

I went to my computer, right click, manage, disk management and realized that the drive is unallocated. Is there anyway 2 fix this without losing my stuff if its not already lost?

If i recall correctly you could use partition magic but you have to buy it unless ..... Or you could get the free Ranish partition manager thru google. And i believe you can google other partition managers as well.

Or, you could simply burn the contents of the drive to dvd or cd and then let windows xp do the job for you.
Or copy some of it to your c: drive or another drive, external usb or firewire drive, and the rest to cd\dvd.
How much data is on there?
How many mb are unallocated?
