Hard Drive Identity is a mystery

I have a used Dell (the owner bought it, not me) and I need to identify the HD. It shipped with a 10gb drive in 2001, but it now has what Win2k sees as a 'Platinum 060G 2F7200'. I pulled it out of the machine and there is no manufacturer tag on it, It just has a plain Silver case with PLATINUM in blue letters on the top. the only other info it has is ata-133 and made in singapore.

Google did not provide any help.

it appears the platinum line of hard drives was created by MicroNet Technology, Inc.

However, it does not appear to be selling internal hard drives any longer.

I ran into one of those about a year ago. At the time the fellow had so many problems that he just decided to have me re-install his system all over fresh, so i didnt touch the hard drive settings. The jumper settings may be right on the drive somewhere. Or you may be able to google them if you cant get them from the above site.

My guess would be 60gig hard drive at 7200rpm.

It may have originally been in an external drive case.

Actually guys I should have told you why I need to know who made it. It was screwed up from day one.

So I wiped the drive and reloaded everything. Then it started losing files at one point there were only about 150 files in the system32 directory. So I used the ERD to fix it, and I noticed disk errors in the event log.

I decided to just replace it so I disconnected the zip drive and put the new drive in, but I ran out of time so I put the platinum back in so the user could work the next morning. I checked the logs and the disk error is gone. SO.... I was looking for a manufacturer diag utility to see if the drive is indeed dieing, or if the zip drive was messing it up.

yes, Platinum drives are made by MicroNet. So check them out.

Thanks Lloyd, I did see thier site before I posted, but there was no utilities that I could find. anyone know of good share/freeware I could use to check this thing out.

I am only a consultant here not full time, but I know that noone backs anything up except the main server. I also know that if it crashes my phone will ring off the hook because the user is a sales guy and will tell me that it is costing him thousands of dollars in sales for every second he can't use his machine.

hrmmm...

MicroNet does have a hard drive utility, you may just need to fill out a tech support request form to get it from them though.

The hitachi diagnostic utility Drive Fitness (available from their site), works with other manufacurer's disks too (don't know how comprehensive it is).

IBM also has a diagnotic that works for all hard drives, i believe.
