1. Server Copaq ML360 about 8 years old.
2. HDD 2 has an orange light on it, 6 HDD al together.
3. I have a spare HDD same size.

Problem or not?.. the system admin install Windows 2003 on all 6 HDD breaking it up into 2 partions one is a c: drive and the other is a D: drive (SYSTEM DRIVE).

The computer is running find. The admin that installed this system is telling me not to shut down and installed this HDD, he said that we have to bebuild the system because the SmartStart CD was not compatible with 2003 so he just installed booting from the Window 2003 CD.

I am in the process of creating an image of this server, that way I can bring it down and replace the HDD then reinstall the OS and all data.

My question to you is will this server acknowlage the hdd and rebuild it or will I have to reinstall the OS?

The reason I have this question is because another adminitrator said that the HDD should rebuild itself upon reboot.

any advice would be helpful.

thanks

I think a call to HP support (which will almost certainly require a credit card given the age of the server) is due.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

Do you have the Proliant Support Pack software installed and if so, does it report any errors?

Proliant Support Pack on this computer was not compatable with 2003.

You can download the latest PSP from the HP website. Isn't the ML360 basically an earlier G1 of the DL360?

What type of RAID are you running? If it is Raid 5, you should be able to hot swap the drive and the "raid controller" will do the rebuilding of the Raid 5 set and all data will be intact. The SmartStart CD/Software is not what does the data protection but the actual raid controller. Make a decision soon because another failed drive will be distasterous. If you have room, and after you get the Smartstart software installed, I would install a spare drive for automatic rebuilding of raid in case of a failed drive. Especially in such an older machine.

This server is raid 0, it has 6 drives 18.2 each. When I am in Windows 2003 it’s one big drive split into a C: and D: drive one 40GB and the other is 47GB, funny thing is with one drive out it is still running. Any one have any theories why it’s still running?

If I install the latest PSP what would that do for me? Would it at least tell me something about this drive or if I could replace it? I am walking on egg shells right now because the guy that is suppose to be backing up our servers is not doing a very good job, not his fault he just received a tape library to archive data, so that, we can start our backups again.

thanks

The PSP would give you the HP System Management Homepage which you can access direct on the server or via - this, amongst other things, will identify whether you have a hardware fault or not.

Are you sure your config is RAID0? Your diskspace figures would indicate you are running RAID5 (ie 6 * 18.2Gb disks running RAID5 = 90Gb approx of useable diskspace, of which 87Gb is allocated to C: & D:). This would explain why your server is still working because you can loose one disk in a RAID5 and the server will function in interim mode. Loosing a disk in a RAID0 config will break the server (either your C: or D: depending on what disk failed)

can you reboot the server and watch the bios bootup until the Raid config shows up. Push F8 I believe to enter and find out the exact Raid. We cannot recommend proper advice until then. Thanks! :)
