Recently my Maxtor 100gb drive went down. I had had many error messages and boot failures but these were intermittent so I soldiered on as one does, then disaster the drive was not recognised at all. no pc, kids and wife annoyed, unable to get important e-mails, in short a disaster.
Got replacement under warranty and all is now fine. However I tried to get some old data off the old disk. For a while it worked fine as a slave although kept giving errors when trying to copy some files and still got error messages on boot.
I tried Easy recover prog and it could see the drive even though the My computer didnt but could not tell what filesystem it was (NTFS) so I was unable to complete the transfer of some files.
Now if I plug the old drive in as a slave the pc does not recognise either hard drive and wont boot.

Please Please can anyone help me even if its just to tell me my old drive is well and truly knackered at least I will stop trying to use it and bin it.

If the system will not boot with the old and new drives connected, but will boot with just the new drive connected, then the old one is history.

Also, I know you're aware that it's easy and inexpensive to back up critical files with a burner, right?

Hey, I had a similar problem, see my post titled "BSOD stop error 24 ..."

I also could not boot to my drive, nor boot from the windows XP file system, but I was able to boot to DOS and use ntfsreader.exe to recover my files. The program is free at ntfs.com.

Try it, and see if you can view your files and directory information
