I ran Spinrite 6 on my harddrive that was corrupted, lost its fat table.
Spinrite 6 did something, just not sure what. It converted the files on the disk to names in sequential order of-
FILE000.CHK through FILE9999.CHK.
But this does not seem helpful. Any idea if what I have is any good or is it a total bust?

Thanks,

Doug

Not had huge experience with Spinrite, but never seen it do that. You could try running the trial version of GetDataBack and see what it finds. You can't recover anything with the free version, but it doesn't alter the drive in any way...

Those look like filenames Window's Chkdsk would produce when it runs and finds what it considers to be lost files or
folders.

Normally you could rename those files, and change the extension to get the original file back. however without knowing what they are its not going to be easy.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Thanks guys. vacunita I will save the files and see what I can do to make of them.

I am 99.9999% certain that the file naming was done by chkdsk. Spinrite operates at sector level, not file level. Spinrite will spare off bad sectors and recover data from bad sectors that windows will not even attempt to do more than mark as bad and drop the data. Therefore I suspect you let windows have its wicked way first. I always let spinrite do its thing first.
