I have had three incidences in the past few months when my second hard drive has come up with the following error:

--------------------------------

Disk drive D: not formatted

Do you want to format now?

--------------------------------

Unfortnately it now becomes inaccessible so I have formatted within DOS. Is there any way of keeping my data and avoid the format??

Any help appreciated (will help me next time! lol)

Ed,

I would need more info about how the second drive is configured, (connected to your PC via the Primary, or Secondary controller), and which role it is set up to perform, (Master/Slave), but I suspect that the problem is with the configuration in the BIOS.

More Info?

Sorry for being so vague. Here are the facts:

Its is set up as a slave on my primary IDE channel.

Windows ME
Abit KG7
Athlon 1200
512 DDR RAM
8.4 GB Seagate (5,400)
41.1 GB IBM Deskstar GXP (7,200)- Problem Drive

I have games installed, MP3's, Software Archive, and work (mainly Doc's, html). No programs installed to it.

No know virus problems detected.

I do have Kazaa installed which I hear may carry a Trojan but that is installed on c: and the file dlder.exe which is the supposed source of the trojan can't be found.

IDE cables fine. New recently and the problem was happeneing before.

Does anyone know of a recovery method for when this happens or is it just gonna have to be a format again if it happens again. I backup regularly but its still annoying when it happens!!!

Thanks for any help!

If it is possible rather place the second drive on the 2nd IDE channel as master. The 2 drives might not like eachother. Try Norton Diskdoctor to check the 2nd drive. It might repair whatever damage you have.

Thanks SAseeker,

I'll give that a go and see what happens.
