I'm using a Compaq Presario 1200 xl-111 notebook with windows 98se.I have set the hard disk to spin down after 5 minutes in Power Managment.I have tried other times also but the hard drive keeps on spinning. Are there any settings that I'm missing?
It could be possible that it isn't spinning down because the BIOS doesn't have the power management set right. I would think Windows would supercede this but you never know. You may want to check the power management in your BIOS (something that I don't think Compaq makes very easy). Justin

Just a thought. Perhaps you have an application running that is attempting to write to disk, thus causing the disk not to spin down. Home: SRFlanigan@home.com

Make sure the bios power management setting match those for windows. If they differ, one will spin the drive down, the other will power it right back up. Its really agrivating.
Also, lots of little apps (ICQ, Messenger) write to the HD every time you do something. Check that out as well. ICQ in particular writes to the HD with every incoming and outgoing message.
