We have one Exchange 2003 and five Exchange 5.5 servers. There was a HD failure on one of the 5.5 servers last week. Luckily the MDBDATA and MTADATA folders/contents were on a different drive.

I put in a new HD and rebuilt the server, using the same name. Now when I try to install 5.5 on the rebuilt server I receive the error: The server 'SERVER' already exists in site 'DOMAIN.' You must either completely remove it before continuing, or choose another server to replicate with.

Does anyone know if I can remove the server from the Exchange environment and then re-add it and point it to the DB files that I have?

Try deleting server computer account from the domain first and clear manualy the metadata within Active directory, it still referencing everything to the old SID and RID and computer account and it must be recreated. Join the server to domain again when above is done and you will have no problems.

I hope it helps,
Sam.
