I'm having problems with my hard drive. If I leave the keyboard untouched or don't move the mouse (i.e. it's idle) for about 10 seconds, my hard drive starts clunking as if it is reading and/or writing something. I thought it was the programs running in the background but this was not the case. If anyone has suggestions on what the problem could be or how to fix it, I'd appriciate it.

Thanks

what operating system is this? FatesWebb

if you do what I suggested it is not my fault...

Do you think it may be a virus? I've had some before then got Norton 2002. Could Antivirus be making this happen?

I had this on a Windows Me system. It turned out the Office Find Fast utility was doing this. Once it was disabled, the effect stopped. Disable Find Fast if you have Office installed.
Also on Me systems, the system save utility could be making a restore point.

yeah and it may be freeing up memory to the hdd.. paging... hmm. this could be a tuffy... FatesWebb

Tell us the operating system and list the apps you have installed, and do you have a broadband 'always on' connection to the internet? My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.
