Hey, i'm new here and appreciate any input to this problem. My system had a 80GB and a 160GB hard drive and everything was fine, suddenly my computer shut itself down and would not turn on again (no fans spinning or anything), so i replaced the power supply. Still it wouldn't turn on, so i found out that it would not turn on unless i unplug the 160GB hard drive (which is only a few months old). I plugged the drive into a different pc and it also would not turn on when this drive is plugged into it.

Has anyone heard of this problem before? Maybe the old power supply killed the hard drive or something? Is there any way of fixing this hard drive? Thanks in advance.

paparazi,

It is more likely you are right about this issue than I.

I too am curious to see the end of this tale.

And, Happy New Year Martin,
Bill

It seems pretty certain that when the power supply died, it took the hard drive with it.

Ok, i looked at the hard drive, i don't see any burn marks on the controller chips, it looks normal from what i can tell.

I'm not really sure where the revision numbers are that everyone is talking about. There are numbers all over the place...but on the actual green part of the board it says 94V-0, then 0425. And on the brown part with the connectors on it, it says Rev. A and some numbers. I can post a pic if necessary.

I called seagate about this, and asked about replacing the controller board, he said to his knowledge, it just has to be the same model, and the same firmware version, which i can see on the drive. He wasn't sure, but thats what he's heard from data recovery companies that do this procedure. Does this sound right? I will probably go buy another drive and a torx screwdriver tomorrow and try this out.

I think where you mentioned RevA and some numbers, that is all you need, but i would take the other numbers 94V-0 and 0425 just in case.
Make sure its the same model as well. I dont happen to know who, offhand, who carry seagate drives as most places like best buy and comp-usa carry maxtor and western digital, not sure on seagate. Good luck. Hope all turns out well for you.

Thanks to everyone who helped in this case...

For those few people who care what happened, i bought another hard drive which was the same model, although the firmware version was much different (8.01 compared to 3.06). But i swapped the circuit board anyway and it worked great, i got my data off.

Good for you! glad it worked!
