A friend of mine has been having trouble with his hard drive.

He took it back to the people who built the pc, who said nothing could be done and replaced it, and let him keep the dodgy drive.

You can see all the files and folders, but no files can be opened.

Any suggestions, theres alot of photos hed like to get?

If there is a broken electrical connection, you could try to find the same model of drive, swap out the controller boards and try to access the data.....

Not much info provided here for us to get to grips with the problem...

(1) Was it the bootable drive and what OS, partition type etc?

(2) Does it still boot?

(3) How is he trying to open a file? Windows, DOS or what? And what response is given?

(4) What does SCANDISK make of it?

(5) Have any recovery tools been tried? EasyRecovery etc...
