Hi

I have a Windows XP Pro SP2 computer c/w removable hard disk bay.

If I install a hard disk from say a windows 2000 computer to copy some data over to my xp computer, or even to clone the drive, I always get the "Disk Drive not Formatted, Do you wish to format now?" error when trying to explore the drive

If I put the disk back into the original machine, then all the data is accesable.

The drive is ntfs formatted

I have also noticed this after using sysprep on a windows 2003 server drive

Anyone else come across this

Thanks in advanced

Some information, I don't think it is relevant to your current problem.

And by the way Bill Castner is definitely not a "she", well he wasn't last time I spoke to him. Bill is/was a long time member of this forum and as you can see an extremely valuable one. His recent posts gives me hope that he is rejoining our ranks after a bit of a break elsewhere, we surely need him and certainly missed him.

Is it too early to say "Welcome back Bill"?

Darn,
I thought I could quietly return here.
Thanks all for the nice wishes.

Hi

Thanks everyone for their posts

I am getting a little confused as to why removable storage comes into the issue

The fact the drive is in a removable tray should not make any difference

If I buy a new computer and transfer the data drive from the old one, and connect it as per normal inside, the computer should be able to read the data with no trouble and it would not be classed as removable media. The drives are not being hot swapped. the machine is shut down when the drive is inserted

Thanks again

Ok - bearing in mind I know nothing of these drives.....

Does this tray make a drive hot swappable?

If you right click on the drive icon in My Computer is there an eject option?

If so, what happens if you click it, remove and then re-insert the drive (or tray whichever)?

Also do you have that device listed in the 'safely remove hardware' icon in the "systray" area? If so, you might want to try using that.

The reason for suggesting this is that I have seen similar issues with compact flash cards where XP has got confused as to whether the card (seen as a drive) is in or out.

Of course I'm only surmising here.

Thanks for your post stduc

The tray does not make the drive hot swap in any way

Basically, the ide cable plugs into the back of the tray unit, the drive goes in the caddie. It basically make a straight IDE connection when you insert the drive

I always have the computer off to insert / remove disks

Same issue occurs if I install the drive using normal ide method inside the computer

There is no option to eject nor an safty remove hardware option in sys tray

Thanks again

By any chance, is the drive you're trying to mount a dynamic drive? As opposed to Basic. If so, you need to import the volume via Disk Manager, and then all should be well.

Ok

The drive is not dynamic

I am going to test a couple of different drives later, to see if I can get one that works and see if I can spot a difference
