Hard Disk Light Always On After Installing Sony CDRW 52x

Hi there!
I have a problem with my PC because the moment when I install my new Sony CDRW in my PC (replacing my old CDROM), the hard disk light indicator is always on all through out like the power LED indicator and there is no blinking. It does works fine on my old CDROM.
I used DiskMon to check for disk activity but there is none. The CDROM/CDRW and my hard disk (seagate baraccuda) is using a separate IDE cable. I have no disk in the CDROM.
I tried removing the CDRW and it the hard disk led works normal. I dont know if this is harmful but how can I solve this? Please help me...

Hi there, first two questions... the CD drive is new? and is it jumpered correctly?

first answer: try to get it replaced... sounds like a possible damaged drive...

second answer: through wrong jumpering the PC doesn't know what to do and locks the IDE port up...

The CD Drive is brand new. And the jumper settings and IDE connections are the same as my old CD Drive. The system runs fine. But I don't know if there's something happening in the background. Damaging the PC parts perhaps. I wonder what causes this strange thing.

Are you sure you have the cable connected the right way round?

Does the CD work?? If not try it on another computer.
If it does, something is strange, for sure.

You are right it is STRANGE, that's why I asked about the jumpering and/or if it is new... I would take it back for a replacement, telling the Salespeople about this strange behavior... it is not normal for a CD drive to behave like this AT ALL...

Yes the cdrw/cdrom is working fine. But im not yet testing it for burning. But I installed a few softwares using it and theres no problem.

I tried to removed the new cdrw/cdrom and replace my old cdrom. the wires are laid together then i connect it to the old cd rom the way it was connected to the new one then start the system and everything runs fine. The light is operating normal. Then I set back the new one (with the cables connected the same way along with the jumpers) then the hard disk light is always on again.

Maybe the cdrw has a damaged.
I don't know if the specs affects it but here it is anyway. Just thinking it is on compatibility. Pentium II 350 Mhz, 256 ram, 40 G HD.

I will try it on another computer. Maybe it has the answer.

Are u using an 80 conductor cable?? Also,Go into Device manager and Set the drive letters..What is the config your trying Prim/Sec/Mast/Slave?

Im sorry TT4U but I dont know the 80 conductorcable. I just used what is provided with the new cdrom which is the same as the old cable. Why should I set the drive letters? The hard disk and the CD rom have separate IDE cable. the hard disk is the master.

Its sounds like yuor IDE cable is upside down, that usually happens when you don't have the cable connected properly. Let me know if this helps, Goodluck!

Thanks for the reply infopcdoctor. But as I said in my previous replies, I tested my old CDROM with my new one side by side but still didn't get any luck. I don't experience it in my old cdrom. I'm thinking that maybe it's because my system doesn't meet the requirements of my CDR. (PII 400. mine is PII 350) Maybe on the voltage issues perhaps.

Go to Sony's site and look for info specific to your make/model and issues

Change your BIOS for "Auto" on Secondary Master IDE channel if that's the channel...

Double/Triple check the jumpers

80 conductor has twice as many wires, still 40 pins ....40 wires added for shielding to protect against data corruption over high speed..some drives, usually HDD, won't operate correctly without it.

Do a Google on make/model
Post more INFO here

Sec.Master?...Any Slaves?....BIOS to Auto?...POST sees drive properly?.....Make/model of CDRW?
