Hello!

My computer crash down. When it start, i receive a message who said:

"Dell Disk monitoring Sytem has detected that drive 0 on the primary EIDE controller is operating outside of normal specification. It is advisable to immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk."

What can I do. How I can back up data if i'm unable to start the computer?

The computer is running under Windows 2000. It's an old Dell Optiplex GX100.

Thanks!!!

First, go into your bios and see if the bios sees or lists the hard drive. If it shows no hard drive at all then your hard drive has failed.

One other thing you could do is to take the hard drive out of that pc, move jumper(s) to slave and put the hard drive in another computer as a slave and see if you can see your data that way.

Then there is the freezer trick, but you need to be able to see the drive in your bios or the freezer trick wont work anyway.

Do you have s.m.a.r.t in your bios? If you do have smart and it is disabled then enable it, save and reboot. You should get an error message if the drive is bad. But that is only if you have smart in your bios.

There are recovery programs out there that can help you get your data but you still have to see if the bios can see the drive or not. If the bios cant see the drive then you are out of luck unless you can find another hard drive exactly the same and swap the electronics board from one drive to yours.
Did you hear any grinding noises or clicking noises before the drive died? What make and model is the drive and what size is it?

the error message you are getting is related to SMART. Slave the drive immediately and put it into another computer with the operating sytem already installed. You shoudl be able to read it without too many problems. Make sure that you do not let CHKdisk run before you copy the data.

Hello.

Thanks guys for yours answers.

Yeah, when the computer start, I heard that the hard drive is grinding, then it stop and I receive the message. It'S the same sound that he make before he died.

I will try to find a similar computer to try to install (slave) the hard drive and see if it's work.

Thanks.

The freezer trick is the last thing you try. But if you cant get your data then you can do the freezer trick and also avoid condensation. Cover the hard drive completely with aluminum foil. Then put in a baggie and take the air out of the baggie, then put it in another baggie and take the air out. You wont get any condensation if you do that.
Again, if you do the freezer method, before you cover the hard drive set it to slave and then cover it and put in the freezer for about 6 hours or overnight.
Take the cover off your pc and have everything ready to go before you take the hard drive out. When ready take the hard drive out and put it on your secondary ide channel as slave. When you boot up go into bios and make sure the bios sees the hard drive. Then continue booting and tray and get your data.
If you have tried all there is to try and you are ready to throw the hard drive in the garbage, then, instead, give it a whack on the side with a hammer and see if that helps any. This is a very LAST resort.
I have been able to get data from a bad drive with the freezer method but i have never been able to get data by the hammer method but others have reported that it worked for them.
These things are last resort. You also can google and freely install the program called "get data back" and see what that program reports. If it reports that it can get your data then you might want to buy the program.

In some cases where the pcb board is bad you can change pcb boards but that is not the case with your hard drive as you are reporting the grinding and i dont think that replacing the pcb board will help with the grinding.
