We're having problems on installing applications and Windows updates into our server. Every installation attempt hangs and never finishes installing. For example: We tried installing McAfee Total Protection and it got stuck half way. We tried installing a microsoft patch and it got stuck half way aswell. The Windows icon is in the task bar for updates and when we click on it, no update happens. Is there anything in particular that we can do to fix this? Is there a file that needs to be fixed? I'm sure one of you experts can help in solving this matter, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

What it sounds like is an application that you may have installed awhile back did not complete, and is holding a specific registry key open. Try running REGMON or Process Monitor from the MS Sysinternals site to see what key is being held open, when attempting to perform your installs. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the very helpful tip itsp1965, I'm running RegMon at the moment but how do I distinguish what's properly running and what's not? Is there a way that Regmon can help fix this problem? I would appreciate some extra help, thanks again.

What you can do is run REGMON first and then start the application install. You'll be able to see what keys are being opened/closed, updated during the install process. When you get to the point where it hangs, you'll be able get a snapshot of what is going on at this point. At the sametime you should also check the application log to see if any events are being generated during the installation. Hope this helps.
