I am by far an English major, but I feel that I can punctuate and use proper grammar. I found this article on MSNBC How does a journalist have a career using the word 'hanged' instead of 'hung'? Don't we learn the past, present and future tense in grade school?

At least 23 bodies — many of them hanged — were found dumped in parts of Baghdad, police said Wednesday.

so "Hanged" if you've committed a capital offense, "Hung" otherwise...like domestic violence jennuhw was talking about?

Could thais be explained if act commited to a live soul - it is 'hanged', to the like linens and things is 'hung'...???

It's nice to know that I am going to be threatening my husband with proper English! [ponytails]

Not to beat a dead horse, but the proper term for someone getting their neck stretched has always been "hanged".

Yes, Greg, but "hung" is what you will see in scholarly "Cowboy lore":
Yea, they was hung fer tryin' tuh theive them thar' horses over yonder.

Yeah, but those horses weren't dead, they were stolen. <ROFL> (Beating a dead horse... never mind....)

Heads up!

I'm going out on a limb here, but I prefer (only for others, of course) "Strung up." Dunged if I know why. "Stringed Up" sounds a bit like knitting, to me, as if Auntie had a mean streak. Why, there's a yarn to tell the grandkids.

And "Strang up" sounds a bit, you know, red-neckish. Of course, given the physics of ropes, heads, and rope-to-head connnections, maybe that's to be expected.

I should quit now.

Tim

I'm suprised that you would bough out like that. But it's probably better you leaf it there, otherwise you could have become roped into a different branch of the topic. Maybe even digging in to find the root cause of this discussion.

Oh well, like they say, "No noose is good noose".

The nudist cattle russtler said it beast, er best, "Wrang me Necked!" Mini little calves came to watch, and moorned his passing.

Emoos are known for their neckedness. All Stralians are known for their emoos.

Ano Nynomous

(I have no idea what the above means, on average...)

Wouldn't 'lynched' be acceptable and and minimise any chance of backlash? ;)

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

I think a copious quantity of Fosters is required before that makes sense.

Or maybe a Paul Hogan movie.

Tim:

Are you sure they moorned his passing? Maybe the mooned him, given as calves with four calves have a hard time buying pants? (And the lack on pants leads to a lack of pockets for carrying cash, which makes it even harder to buy pants.)

Or maybe they mooed him, as calves are wont to do?

You may have a beef with my reasoning, but I'd steak my reputation on it.

Sorry gotta hoof it.

Time for another martini.......

Unless they were Ray Lynched, then you'd just be sitting there with a half-empty (or half full?) glass of Celestial Soda Pop.

(If anyone gets THAT obtuse reference, then we need to compare music libraries.... <LOL>)

Some people ask me if a glass is half empty, or half full. I tell them it's twice as big as it should be. ;)

Paul Hogan, Paul Hogan. I've 'eard that name somewhere.

Was he the guy who starred in those "Crocadile Dungaree" movies, the ones where a NYC reporter went Down Under to cover the latest colorful fashion trends among alligator farmers?

Or was that "Dye Hard?"

If it's not a contradiction, I need a large martini.

I've heard of pun ishment before, but it's the first time I really read it.

"That time in Seattle... was a nightmare. I came out of it dead broke, without a house, without anything except a girlfriend and a knowledge of UNIX."
"Well, that's something," Avi says. "Normally those two are mutually exclusive."

Makes me think of Ghandi, remember him? Little guy,big glasses? He walked all over India and back in his bare feet. Ate almost nothing for years, weighed almost nothing, and what he ate was spiced to the roof. Did a ton af good.

You remember what they said about him?

I had to do it... I searched for "hanged, hung", and found this:

Originally these words were pretty much interchangeable, but “hanged” eventually came to be used pretty exclusively to mean “executed by hanging.” Does nervousness about the existence of an indelicate adjectival form of the word prompt people to avoid the correct word in such sentences as “Lady Wrothley saw to it that her ancestors’ portraits were properly hung”? Nevertheless, “hung” is correct except when capital punishment is being imposed or someone commits suicide.

Wish I had something witty to say, but everything I thought of was already in the thread! Thanks to all for the great laughs! Hope this doesn't bring it all crashing down.

Dollie,

IMO, "hung" can certainly still be used properly and in civilized company. Fortunately, it's junior-high meaning is always quite clear.
