I am by far an English major, but I feel that I can punctuate and use proper grammar. I found this article on MSNBC How does a journalist have a career using the word 'hanged' instead of 'hung'? Don't we learn the past, present and future tense in grade school?

At least 23 bodies — many of them hanged — were found dumped in parts of Baghdad, police said Wednesday.

I thought that curtains were hung and that when refering to people who had been through the process of having a rope put around their neck, it tightened & then pushed of a height, and later discovered (phew, just to not say hung !!!) were refered to as hanged !!!!

Just my (feable) understanding !!!!!

<Do I need A Signature or will an X do?>

I prefer hung, but there is actually nothing wrong with "hanged" in the above context.

(scroll down to see same definition as hanged)

However;
I am by far an English major ...
Shouldn't that be, "I am far from being an English Major" ?
Your version suggests that you are an accomplished English Major, I believe. [smile]

[Cheers]

Wow, I had no idea. I always thought it was hung not hanged. Learn something new every day.
So, when I tell my husband that I could have hung him yesterday (or any other day), should it be hanged? [wink]

[lol]

"Well" ... I can see where this is going so I think I will stop here. [tongue]

[Cheers]

If you could have put a rope around his neck and tied him to a branch, then "hanged" is the word to use.

On the other hand, you could have thrown him into the washing machine, wrung him out and hung him on the line with the sheets and towels. [lol]

Hi,
But...don't you want your husband to be (insert rude joke here ) [blush]

It is my understanding that Peter North and the rest of his colleagues are "hung"...the rest of us (when we do wrong) are "hanged".

When Johnny Carson was host of the Tonight Show, once there was a dicussion on use of a particular word. Johnny asked, "Are there any English majors in the audience?"

A British gentleman stood up and announced. "I am an English colonel. [wink]

That's a similar word choice for the baseball term relating to a fly ball.

The batter hits fly ball that is caught by a fielder.

Therefore, the batter flied out.

If the batter flew out, the umpire would remove him from the lineup and he might break a bone or two upon landing.

...or my other sports favourite, when a quarterback in American football changes a play (after the huddle) at the line of scrimmage: The commentators say that the quarterback is audiblizing a play. Excuuuuse Me? I believe we need to see changes vocabularywise, commentatorwise.

Yup. The phrase used by the executioner is "Hanged by the neck until dead", so "Hanged" if you've committed a capital offense, "Hung" otherwise.

Chip, I hate to be cynical, but I'm sure it's "hanged" if you've got a rope around your neck that's cutting off your air supply (or breaks your neck if you're lucky), and not only if you're committed a capital offense..

"That time in Seattle... was a nightmare. I came out of it dead broke, without a house, without anything except a girlfriend and a knowledge of UNIX."
"Well, that's something," Avi says. "Normally those two are mutually exclusive."

Good point, Trevoke.

But Chip brings up a good point. This shouldn't sound too odd to anyone who has watched a lot of westerns.

This all reminds me of my Great-Grand Uncle Enoch Jefferson Hunt, who was hung/hanged for horse stealing. In our family history, it shows up as...
Hunt Family History said:
Uncle Enoch died at a public gathering when a platform fell beneath him.

OK, OK, I skipped a few steps:

Convicted of a capital offense, followed by sentencing, followed by the sentence being carried out, resulting in being hanged by the neck until dead.
