I have a MXe running as the DHCP server with all of the correct options programmed. However when new phones 5420's are being plugged they are getting stuck on a screen which shows a message "Using Option 125" they will not go any further than this. Any ideas?

If in doubt......Wing it!!

what software are you running?
Are vlans used on the switches?
can you plug a phone into the front of the 3300 with a power brick? Does this get an IP?

Try completing a DBMS save from maintenance commands

The option 125 is fine there are already handset working on the the system that recieved their credentials via DHCP on the Mitel.

There is a VLAN set up and the correct settings are in the option 125 string.

We have our suspicions that someone else has put some sort of DHCP server on the network and the phone is being given an incorrect IP address.

If in doubt......Wing it!!

The symptoms indicate that phone cannot communicate with the controller via the options delivered in option 125.

You can statically assign the values to prove/disprove their validity.

Do you have any phones that work using the DHCP?
You only mention ones that don't.

check that your tftp services have the correct load to support 5420. Use the help file.

Try adding an 'IP Helper' to the 3300 IP address in the network switches

could be you dont have the correct vlan on the port as well. When my phone originally gets option 125. it will release the IP and rebroadcast for dhcp on the vlan specified in 125. If you dont have that vlan correctly configured on the port, that dhcp broadcast on the new vlan will go no where.

What switches are you using?
What discovery protocol are you using LLDP or CDP?
Is the switchport connected to the Mitel trunking/tagging VLANS?
Is the Mitel on VLAN 1?

Unless you provide specific information we can only make recommendations based on assumptions.

Hi Frenchy
Are you sure you have 5420 phones?
Or is it a 5240
If so has the phone been connected to your system before?

What is the software load on you 3300 controller?

What options do you have in your DHCP options?

This phone might not know about the 125 option as it might have old firmware.
You may have to put in the old 128, 129 & 130 options to get it to boot so it can download the latest firmware

If it didn't know about option 125 it would not say "Using Option 125"

No strictly true!
This is why I asked what type of phone it is
as the DHCP is trying to use the 125 option for the phone but the phones firmware does not know how to interpret/use option 125

Yes Strictly true.
If the phone firmware is not aware of option 125 it will only look for option 128. It will never display "Using Option 125" unless it already knows how to use it.
