Hi,

I have a user who had an IT company recommend and install a 3rd party program called GWX Control Panel :
It stops Windows 10 being shoved in your face or you accidentally allowing the upgrade through Windows Update.

Is this program legit?

Is there a better way of stopping Windows 10 in its tracks?

Thanks,

Why Windows 10 isn't really free: The subtle new world of built-in costs

This article implied you have to buy other crap , such as premium upgrades to make Windows 10 work properly?

If the 'built-in costs' are optional I don't understand the point the article is trying to make?

No, it doesn't. I'm not sure how you read that into it.

Indeed, the article specifically states "You don’t have to pay Microsoft any more money"

> I don't understand the point the article is trying to make

The point it is trying to make is that Microsoft is trying to use W10 as a platform for monetizing alternate revenue streams, since they don't really make much money of consumer OS purchases anyway (even before W10). And they hope that you'll buy extra stuff (like the Pro version of Solitaire - possibly nicer than the freebie included, since it excludes adverts, but hardly critical to the operation of the OS) from their handy Windows Store - but most of the streams don't actually involve the consumer spending any more money (expanding Bing market share through the increased of Cortana doesn't cost you anything). So, whilst W10 upgrade is free to the consumer, the cost of providing that is offset by these other revenue streams.
