I'm trying to design an HTML email that uses a background image, but GroupWise 6.5 (and Outlook, for that matter) doesn't seem to support background images in HTML view.

Does anyone know what version of HTML GroupWise 6.5 supports? 4.01? Earlier? Is it fully-compliant?

Background: Composed HTML message offline in a code editor (EasyASP). Incorporated the image using the "background" attribute in the "table" element in the message. Previewed in a browser (IE 6) - everything looks OK. Paste into GroupWise in HTML view. Everything is there, except for the background image. Also pasted into MS Outlook with the same result.

Thanks for any thoughts, suggestions, insights or commiserations!

In HTML Compose View, there is a "Background Image" button on the toolbar.

If, for some reason, that feature is not giving you what you want, you can further customize your message by composing it in a text/HTML editor. Once you have the message as you want it, save it to your computer. NOTE: Be sure to save any images to a location that is accessible from the Internet (like a and make the appropriate src references in your HTML. The recipients will need to download the images separately, as they won't be attached to the message.

Next, open a new email in GroupWise. Be sure that you are in HTML view. Click "File > Retrieve" (or press F11). Locate the HTML file and click OK.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, Ron! Very helpful.

One follow-on note: The "Background Image" button has no repeat controls for the image you select as the background. Thus, it defaults to tiling the selected image to fill the background area of the message.

If you want a non-repeating image, then the "Retrieve" option outlined above works well. It does require a bit of tweaking for precise positioning of the image relative to the content. That is, I found it does not display exactly the same way as in the browser. Still, a good solution.

Thanks again, Ron.

cheers,
Brian

Glad I could be of assistance. The "Retrieve" feature is a good little feature that I didn't even know about until very recently.
