Guestamate of Number of Servers

I have searched everyone and fumbled through the Capacity Tool to no avail. Can someone verify or give me a guess at a recommendation how many servers for the following for SMS 2003, SQL, Distribution Points per client numbers: (this is my guess)

1 to 1,200 clients: 1 SMS Server, 1 SQL Server, 2 DP
1,201 to 4,500 clients: 1 SMS Server, 1 SQL Server, 3 DP
4,501 to 9,000 clients: 1 SMS Server, 1 SQL Server, 4 DP

Keep in mind the SMS Server will also be the MP, SLP and RP.

Any recommendations would be appreciate. If there is a whitepaper someone stating this, that would be helpful too.

All on the same LAN? or spread out over WAN links?

Each group of client breakdown would be a separate Primary Site reporting back to the Central site over WAN link.
