I've just got Gentoo up and running. I've got XP on my /dev/hda1 and /boot on /dev/hdb1. I've configured grub with this grub.conf:

default 0
timeout 30

title=Gentoo 2.4.25
root (hd1,0)
kernel /kernel-2.4.25-gentoo root=/dev/hdb2 vga=788

title=Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

I get the boot menu with both options but whenever I try to load XP (not that I really want to but for work!). It flicks some text too quick to read then goes back to the boot menu. Any ideas anyone?

My XP boot grub entry looks like this

title WinXP
root (hd0,1)
makeactive
chainloader +1

I don't remember the reason for hd0,1 , I think it has something to do with the recovery partition

I fixed it. Found out I had loaded grub onto /dev/hda1 rather than /dev/hda I think! Queue the XP CD and FIXMBR... Thanks for the suggestion anyway.
