I've just reinstalled Win98 and both during Windows setup and since I've been plagued by this error message:

Grpconv
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

Usually the application that is running pauses when the error message comes up and resumes when I click Close without closing the application, but often it only goes momentarily and keeps coming back. During setup at certain points where Setup was updating files the process appeared to come to a complete standstill as I kept clicking Close repeatedly and nothing seemed to be happening. I must have clicked it 500 times before things finally started to move again.
At the moment I am reinstalling applications as and when i need to use them, and this is when the error becomes a real nuisance. I can't find anything relevant to my situation on the MS knowledge base, and I wonder if someone knows something about this error?

i had a similar problem after reinstalling win 98
nothing seemed to work
until i copied the file from a friends computer n replaced it with "sfc"
try it worked for me
make sure u backup the file just in case ........

Thanks for your reply truyt, but I don't quite follow your meaning when you say "I copied the file from a friend's computer and replaced it with 'sfc'". What is sfc? I think I should point out here that I looked for the file using Find Files and Folders and it is located in three places on my system. There is a copy in the C:\WINDOWS folder (where my current Windows installation is located) and another in the D:\WINDOWS folder (where a previous installation was located). Both these files have a size of 55kb and were modified on 4/23/99. There is also another copy in the D:\WINDOWS\VCM folder, which is only 38kb and was modified on 11/16/01. The plot thickens. It's all as clear as mud to me, but I'm sure there's a clue here somewhere.

hi
check if ur d: file is also corrupted or not
if not use sfc to replace the corrupted one
otherwise copy the file from a similar system
sfc is system file checker
just type sfc in the run command box n click on "extract"
type in the file name n click on start
in the "restore from" choose the folder where u have
saved the file (the new one)n in the save in choose the original path ie c:/windows see what happens but make sure u backup
