Ok, here's my situation. I've recently started at a company that no longer has a groupwise or novell enviornment. They have several old dlt tapes with groupwise on them. I need to restore this and be able to migrate to exchange. (long story) I've never supported groupwise before.. and only have minimal novell knowledge... help? If anyone can point me in the direction to find good info, or provide tips on what I'm going to come accross or just any help in general would be great. Thank you in advance.

It will be a long and a huge pain, hope it's worth it.

Figure out what version of GroupWise it is. If it's 4.1a, then it will be pretty simple since that version isn't NDS aware. If it is a 5.x version, you will also have to worry about restoring NDS if you need to get around any passwords.

In both cases you just restore the post office directory and you can use a groupwise client to access it directly. However, if the admin at the time set the system to client/server mode only (in 5.x), then you'll have to get the GWPOA.NLM to run on a NetWare box. If you have to get around a password in the 5.x world, you will also need to restore the domain directory and the NDS database (and get it to work).

You may just want hire a local guru to build the mail system for you if your not familure with Novell, cause if you don't, you'll know more that you really care to when your done doing this. To migrate the mail, don't look to Novell for an answer, they don't offer one (why would they?). Microsoft will have to give you the tool to migrate (there are better programs from third parties). If you are in 5.5 world, you would be able to use an Outlook plugin to access the GroupWise mail store. Brent Schmidt CNE, Network +

I have had to do this before and I found a company that specializes in doing these conversions. Send them the tapes and they send you the groupwise mail back in just about any format, in our case we needed them in PST format. They didnt require passwords or anything. Check them out.
