I am in the process of copying an old poster I feel I have successfully come up with a excellent result with illus.CS.My problem now is that I'm trying to group the text of the poster as one layer. Problem is that there are fancy tales on some of the letters and they intertwine giving a celtic dimension to the letters but if I try to get only the letters+ the tales in one group I seem to be getting other elements of the poster I have tried both the selection tools and the lasso tool. So I'm thinking can i break lines! Can I go in and mark a point and delete that particular point without deleting the whole line connected to the point or should i say the segment or is there other ways to stop getting other segments along with my choice.
thanks........Denis

Hi Denis-
I don't know if this will help, but have you tried using the Scissors Tool? With it, you can sever connections, and then delete the section (specify it using the Direct Selection Tool) that lies between the cut points.
I'm not really clear on exactly what it is you're trying to do - do you perhaps have an on-line link to your poster, or a section of it?

If you are having trouble selecting certain elements because others are "in the way" try hiding them.

Click the element you want... but get the wrong one... then press CMD+3 (CRTL+3 for windows I think) and the item will disappear. It's not deleted, just hidden.
Keep doing this till you get the one you want.

To bring back your hidden elements simply press CMD+SHIFT+3 (CTRL+SHIFT+3).

You might also like to try Outline mode as this can often make it easier to see the edges of elements.

I think I've had the same problem. Pasted drawings on top of a photo and then tried to group some of the drawings and ended up selected the entire photo. I usually move all the background stuff to the side, group my drawings, then move the background back to its proper position. Also, there is a "Lock" feature you can use on your background and then work on your lettering with "selecting" the work behind the lettering. "Lock" is in the "Object" menu.
Good luck.
