if any one can suggest how i can approach this, since i am struggling to do this grouping since it need to be calculated for multiple situations
any help will be much appreciated

Sorry Ian, may be i am not doing this right, but unless i summarise on paper i cant get to this position, the data you see below is what i get after summering by cust/paper/type, if i summarise on cust/type only then i cant work out what combination of type a student had for a paper, which is key grouping by method of study

currently this is how i get the data after grouping by Cust/paper/type

Then you will have to insert same report in again as a subreport and then group cust/type for the paper summary as discussed above.

Save your existing report with new name, then add new report as sub report.
