When I start AD Users & Computers on my WIN2K Pro, and connect to my local DC, when looking at the properties of the domain and selecting the Group Policy tab, it takes an age to display the policies in effect. Under the list it says "This list obtained from" and lists the PDC emulator for the domain which is at a remote site hence the delay in listing. Can I get it to obtain the list from the local domain and thus make editing the policy quicker?

Thanks,

Dan

I assume there is a DC locally? I think you need to make your local DC a Global Catalog Server. You do this by right clicking the NTDS setting of the server under "Sites & Services" Selecting Properties and enabling the Global Catalog option.

Then under "Users & Computers" Right click your domain and select "Connect to Domain Controller" and select your local DC.

Hope this helps Glenn

Glenn,

Thanks for the info. When I open AD Users and Computers ti shows as being connected to my local DC (Active Directory Users and Computers [Local DC Name].

It is only when I look at the Policy for the domain or OU that the list of policies is obtained from a remote DC.

Normally you will have problems when you have more domains in a site, and you assign a GPO to the site. In this case the DC from the root domain needs to be contacted.

GC I don't see beeing the isusue here. Of course it is written as rule that you need to have GC, DNS server (and a replica for the _msdc zone) on your remote location.

But, back to your problem I'm afarid that you don't have other solution.
Group Policy Editor needs to contact the PDC emulator. And it is nothing to do! Of course, you can move your PDC, but th eimpliactions are dramatically. I don't know what network configuration is there. If you have old win clients, if your Ad is in native mode,. etc. Gia Betiu

I solved my problem!

When editing the group policy, clicking on View and selecting DC Options you can select which DC to use. I selected the one used by the Snap in and it is now showing me the list from my local DC and editing the copy of the policy on the local DC and replicating it the other, makes life much easier!

Thanks for the pointers.
