I was wondering if a an ATI Radeon 9600XT 256mb graphic card will work with my K7S5A motherboard and a 300W powersupply on XP. I think it will, but I want to be sure before I open the box.
Thanks.

The issues I mentioned are with the ECS K7S5A and Nvidia cards FX family and newer.
The 9600XT works fine on this motherboard as it is an ATI not Nvidia.
The 9600XT represents a significant improvement over the basic GF2 MX400, it is several times more powerful and supports DX9.0 so Silent Hunter 3 should run smoothly and with all the nice eye candy although not at maximum settings.

Thanks for the info! My only remaining concern is the slot keys configuration. I've read for hours now and no one website will spell it out in black and white for me. I removed my current GF2 MX400 today and visually examined the 4X slot on my k7s5a. I'm assuming that since there was no divider in the slot that it's a universal AGP 2.0 slot geared to run at the normal 1.5volt. Do I need to be concerned with looking for a particular 9600xt card for this type of slot or will any 9600 I choose fit properly and set its own voltage internally? Thanks again!
Sincerely,
Bon

Since your board supported the GF2 card (which was AGP 4x), then we know that the slot supports 1.5v. Therefore, any AGP 4x/8x card out there should work fine, since they support both 1.5v and 0.8v.

I don't believe I've seen any "AGP 8x only" cards. If you come across any, steer clear of them...

bonfleck, I do have a 9600XT on a K7S5A. It does work fine! FarCry and Halo 2 run great!

I've been trying to get my Sapphire Radeon 9600xt 128mb card to work with my Intel D850GB board, and am able to get the comp. to POST and start windows fine.
About 5 min. into any game, the card freezes in a loop and restarts.
Is this an AGP 2.0 4x (1.5V) issue with an AGP 8x (0.8v) card in a board that supposedly ONLY supports AGP 1.5V as per this website?:

Here is my system as far as i can recall:
Intel P4 1.4Ghz
D850GB board
512mb RD RAM (4 modules)
Sapphire Radeon 9600xt 128mb
Maxtor 80GB HD
generic (?) 40GB HD
Samsung 32x CD/RW
Windows 2000 Pro (w/ latest updates and service packs)

I run into trouble with all games, so far I've tried Mafia and Battlefield Vietnam with equal results.
HELP!

After 5 minutes of gaming. It looks like a thermal problem with the 3D engine. And no problem when running an office application? Try to get a replacement card.
