I have a gigabyte motherboard (GA-8IHXP) and it says the following about the AGP port "1 x AGP universal slot (4x/2x-AGP 2.0 compliant), supports 1.5v display card only.".

Does anyone know if any FX5200 graphics cards or better would work on this motherboard???

My current graphics card is a Hercules 3D Prophet Kyro 64MB 4000XT PCI and it is just not up to scratch.

Can anyone recommend a card I could get???

Thanks.

All newer cards(AGP 3.0)will work...for the money, either the geforce 5700,or the ATI 9600. Just don't get the SE suffixed cards as they are crippled, compared to the standard, pro, and xt versions.

Card recommendations spring up two to three times a week in this forum. First, I recommend you search here and other sites for some advice.

With that said and if you're still in need of another resource, let us know how much you are willing to spend and whether you can settle with a DirectX 8 card or must have DirectX 9 compatibility.

Thanks for the replies rclarke250 and cdogg. I have looked at this forum and the general consensus seems to be that the AGP 8x cards should be backward compatible to AGP 4x???

My system is as follows:
OS: XP SP1
Processor: Pentium 4 2.40GHz
RAM: 512KB RIMM
Motherboard: Gigabyte (GA-8IHXP)
Current Graphics Card: Hercules 3D Prophet Kyro 64MB 4000XT PCI

At the minute, I cant play Grand Theft Auto or LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring. The screen just goes blank. I have downloaded all the latest drivers from the Microsoft website and also from the Gigabyte website but to no avail. That is why I want to change my graphics card.

I am willing to spend up to £150 and would prefer to get a card that is compatible with DirectX 9.0. Do you think a GeForce FX5900XT would be compatible???

Thanks for your help.

Yes, a GeForce 5900 XT would be the perfect card to get for that amount of money. It's main competitor at that price, the ATI Radeon 9600 XT, is unable to match its performance.

Because you mentioned that your slot is AGP 2.0 compliant, then any AGP 3.0 card (AGP 8x) will work in your AGP slot. That pretty much includes every new card on the market. Hope that answers your question...

I can't get it in my head,Will a 2x/4x video card be ok to replace a 2x card with, I have a HP Pavilion 8860 with a Vanta Vanta LT card in it that is bad.......Thanks

Well, technically AGP 4x cards are backwards compatible to run at 1x or 2x speeds. But the slots themselves can only run at their specified voltages. So what does mean to you? Simple. You need to check the specs of the AGP slot on your motherboard. I attempted to look up your model, but like you said, it only reports an AGP 2x card and doesn't say anything about the slot.

If you have an AGP 4x slot, then you're OK. If you have an AGP 2x slot, then you need to find out what voltages it can run. Most 2x slots only support 3.3V, while others support 1.5V. You need to have the support for 1.5V to run newer cards, which can run at either 1.5 or 0.8 volts.
