I installed AIX 5L v5.2 on a pSeries 615 with GXT135P Graphics Accelerator video adapter and a SVGA monitor as a graphics screen. I also connected a PC via serial cable and ran terminal emulation -- this serves as my console to the AIX machine. Upon power up, I can only get to see the lft login prompt on the graphics monitor. I can login as root, run "startx" but the screen blanks out. However, if I login using the console PC, the system shows a number of X-related processes running:

TTY PROCESS
lft0 sh /usr/bin/X11/startx
lft0 xclock
lft0 -ksh
lft0 ksh /usr/lpp/X11/defaults/xserv
lft0 xinit /bin/sh -c /bin/ksh /usr/
lft0 /usr/lpp/X11/bin/X -D /usr/lib/
lft0 mwm -multiscreen

If I kill all of the above processes, the lft0 comes alive again and gives me the Unix shell prompt.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks.

Robert

Try:

Explanation:
If any device was connected to the first serial port (#1) this causes the machine to output the SMS to an unidentified console & not to the default Graphic monitor.

Permanent fix / workaround
1.Make sure serial #1 is defined on the machine /Baud rate set at 9600.
The following should be the default settings for tty0

[TOP] [Entry Fields]
TTY tty0
TTY type tty
TTY interface rs232
Description Asynchronous Terminal
Status Available
Location 01-S1-00-00
Parent adapter sa0
PORT number [0] +
Enable LOGIN disable +
BAUD rate [9600] +
PARITY [none] +
BITS per character[8] +
Number of STOP BITS [1] +
TIME before advancing to next port setting [0]

+# TERMINAL type [dumb]

2.Shutdown the machine completely
3.Connect a laptop via the serial port to the serial #1 on the machine using the RS232 female to female cable.
4.Start the machine, after few seconds it will show the icons as text on the laptop, press 1 before the last word (NOT F1) on your laptop to get to the SMS in text mode.
5.Select #3 Utilities
6.Select #7 Select Console
7.You will than be asked to press 0 to define this terminal as a console.
DON’T PRESS 0 ! at this moment you will get the same request on your Graphic monitor suggesting you press 2 ‘to select this monitor’
8.Press 2, this should start the SMS on your graphic monitor
9.now you will see the icons, press F1 to enter to the SMS.
10.disconnect the laptop from the serial port .

Good luck

Another possible reason could be that the refresh rate is too high for the monitor. Try a lower rate. This can be changed with the command [tt] smitty chres_refrt[/tt].

Further to your replies, instead of changing the refresh rate, I was able to replace the monitor to a higher function one (Viewsonic) and it worked!

Thank you for your assistance. You've been a great help.
