Is it possible to produce a PDF from PC based MS-Word files with embedded "picture" format graphics? Yes it sort of works, but the screen display appearance of patterns is broad uniform grey stripes. Only at 400 x zoom do the patterns appear. They print, and they're sort of OK, but no good for e-publishing.

Acrobat writer works on the pictures (but lacks the embedding and auto-bookmarks). Distiller doesn't (using Acrobat's own PS driver) and yes, I've twiddled all the sampling settings to every combination. Adobe.com/helpline hadn't a clue, but it seems a bit basic! I can't be the first to find this, so why can't I track down the answer?

Andy,

What res and format are you using for your graphics?

I just put together a very large document with about 70+ images, graphs and bar charts. The documents were developed in MS Word and exported to Acrobat using the distiller option within Word, then organized in Acrobat. Various graphics came from PhotoShop, Powerpoint and Excel. For images that I worked on, I used jpgs, for chapters that came to me completed in MS Word I have no idea, but all looks good. The final output will be to CD for distribution. All is going well so far.

Do you have more info that you can share on your project?
Hi, thanks for the reply: sounds like you're getting there! Our aim: a single document that prints locally, that sent as PCL to Docutech printers is idential, and converts in one to PDF. I don't want to assemble documents from various packages into Acrobat, just convert from my Word file. (I have a backlog of research reports to get on the Internet.)

We produce Excel charts using patterns at the broadly-spaced end of the spectrum, pasting these as pictures into MSWord, floating, wrapping top and bottom. We use TrueType fonts throughout. Printing at 600dpi our product is perfect on HP laser and, as PCL5 binaries, on Xerox Docutech.

We then convert; PDF Writer won't bookmark or embed fonts, scales graphic patterns to greys and screws up on italicised quote characters in most fonts dropping lines or paras. So that's out. Distiller works perfectly, except graphics patterns sample as blocks that don't merge well, and become uniform grey bands below 400% zoom. Tried every combo of sampling and resolution. Could email a sample page: andy.davidson@employment-studies.co.uk (and I'm desperate for a result!!)
