Guys,

Learning Access and thus pardon the question. I am well versed with Excel and can prepare graphs easily. Is it better to generate a graph in excel with all the flexibility it offers and then import it to access report or does Access have an equally versatile graphical capability. If so, how do I generate graphs in Access. Only thru the chart wizard. What about formatting capabilities. Thanks in advance.

Access and Excel use the MS Chart functionality. Once you create a blank report, you can start the process by clicking the detail section and selecting Insert / Chart from the menu. You'll need to have a table or query set up from which to pull the specific chart data. Typically, I let the user select the criteria in a form, the query is based upon data on the form, and the chart graphs what the user needs.
Once you create the "wizard" chart you can double click, the chart a do most of the things you can do through Excel.
You can even have the report container based on a different query to gather your header or other context based information.

Hoped this helped as a start.

i have read your reply and i am trying to build a pie chart on a report in access. the query though is based on a number of search criteria. so when i open the report i trying to bound the report at that time. i don't see a row source or record source for setting the chart....am i missing something???

thanks!!!!

The report itslef just acts as a container for the graph. Therefore, the report itself IS NOT bound to the data on which the graph will be based. Simply open a report in design view with no wizard.
Then, click in the detail section and insert a chart into the design section. The wizard will then allow you to link the chart to the appropriate data.
