I have a file that I have been placing ads on for three or four months that has started to do weird things.

When I File> Place, the graphic ad goes directly in without the message to link. Therefore they are all imbedding and the pages refresh and redraw really slowly.

I have never had a PM file do this before. Has the file gone bad?

Which platform and version of PM are you using?

See if this FAQ from AdobeForums helps.

When placing images in a PageMaker file, the following message appears:
“The graphic in the linked file would occupy xxxxxxx bytes in the publication. Include the complete copy in the publication anyway?”
The correct answer to this question is always "NO".

(You can permanently avoid this popup in future docs by unchecking "store copy in publication" under Element -> Link Options with no publication open. You can do the same to avoid further prompts in pre-existing documents.)

John,

Wow! That was the problem. Now here is the big question. How did that setting get that way? I didn't do it! And to add to the mystery, the file originated with me. I know I didn't do it. It just started imbedding one day.

I changed the setting by unchecking the box, and tried it out. I no longer see the warning “The graphic in the linked file would occupy xxxxxxx bytes in the publication. Include the complete copy in the publication anyway?” The graphic jumped right in.

I checked it in the Links Manager, and the graphic was there. So, I guess I can be confident that the images are not imbedded now.

I thanks you much. Your help is always great!

PM configuration files have been known to suffer from corruption, and when presonalised settings go astray, Adobe recommend deleting them. PM will recreate the original factory settings next times it's loaded. However, these defaults are not necessarily the optimum ones.

It's generally considered better practice to just link images and not embed them. The benefits are smaller PM files and allegedly a reduction in the risk of file corruption.
