I recently installed Server 2000 and have a question. I have a USERS that contains the personal directories for each employee. This directory is shared and can be viewed by authorized users. The problem is they can see all of the sub-folders tool (eventhough they do not have access to them). How can I limit a user from viewing all of the sub-folders in a directory except for the ones they have access to? That way they can not see all of the other employee folders listed under the USERS directory?

Thanks

Scott

I have seen this in all of the organizations I have worked. There is no reason that I can think of to have the USERS directory shared, or have share permissions that include general users. If anyone knows why this folder is shared, please enlighten me.

I believe the correct way to map/use personal directories is to share the actual users folder, i.e.: sharename of jsmith$.
this will allow each individual user to connect to their share to which only they and admins have access to, and it eliminates them from seeing the folders from other users.

But to answer your question, I don't believe without 3rd party progs(don't know which ones, or if they exist), that there is a way to restrict users from "seeing" some folders but not others in a directory by browsing to them.

On the other hand, if the folder is hidden, and they have "Show all files and folders" disabled, they will not see them. You could then restrict them from changing the display settings, and hide ALL folders under the USERS directory, and just give them their home folder name so they could still get to it.
Haha, but i'm 100% sure you don't want to go through all that trouble.

Good Luck, and please post back with your findings.

The only other experience I have with "hidden" folders is on a netware volume. I know you can actually prevent other usersfrom seeing each others.

Good Luck

if you create a share, call the share $name (ie $c or $windows) it will hide them unless viewed by an administrator. havent worked much with win2k, but its worth a try if you havent tried it yet.

um, or if you put the $ sign after the sharename, it will hide it even better. As putting it before the name will do nothing...

Hi,

I know this is an old post but i thought i would see if you came up with a solution b/c i am having a similar problem. Even when i use a $ after the share name that folder is still showing up when the drive is mapped in a login script. I am looking for a way to only show the folders that the users have the correct permissions on. Did u find a way to do this?
