gradient only in black and white?

for some reason when i use teh gradient tool, it is only in black and white.. when i try to change the color of hte gradient, it converts it to grayscale.. but everything else in illustrator works fine in color. can anyone help me? thanks

Select one of the gradient stop - then from the color palette select CMYK for color mode and make color. Do the same for the ending stop.

wait, nothing happens when i click on one of the color stops

oh and also, the "K" of the cmyk is the only adjustable number.. the other bars arent even there

They will be - you'll only see the K bar - then click the little arrow on the Color palette to change to cmyk mode. Then you'll see the C - M - and Y
