Got SP2?

Has anyone installed the newly released SP2? Any issues/comments to share with us?

I assume it must be the final release. I was suprised when I ran Windows Update on my server this morning to see 2003 SP2 listed as a reccomended item.

It is the final release they seem to of sneeked it out so quickly that it's not even on the server team blogg. It's very odd there could be some very surprised admins out there if they have their boxes set to receive updates automatcally.

For all new 2003 server builds, it looks as if you are stuck with only the SP2 release, instead of the 40+ patches that used to be on the update site. So unless you want to run 2003 from CD SP1 patch level, it seems SP2 is it. Comments?

Deployed it on a couple of servers here. Although 2 out the 3 that have it were updated by mistake. (Junior tech added it to the WSUS server by mistake last night!!!)

All seems pretty good. Nothing obvious other than MMC 3.0 which most people will probably have. MSCONFIG changes are the same as the Vista MSCONFIG changes. Nice to have WDS update included - although the documentation on it is as bad as RIS.

If MS are reading this - for the love of God please, please do a document on the whole deployment process using WDS. I don't want to have to read a seperate article on WDS, the another on System Image Manager, and another on ImageX.
I know how to mount images, and add them to WDS (sorta) - guidence on the replcement for sysprep would be great.

Did one of the boxes that you upgraded run RIS Steve? I'm wondering how the upgrade to SP2 will affect my RIS box?

I agree about the documentation it really is shocking for RIS, it's better then it used to be but still way short of what i would expect for a well used feature.

One thing I have noticed is that it fixed the print spooler crash problem on my Vista machines that was happening when we used the pushprinter component when trying to deploy printers. Didnt look much into the documentation of why this would have fixed it but it did and I am happier.

Definitely final. It's in the latest updates from WSUS. I am always a littel leary of deploying SPs via WSUS...I like to do em manually for some reason.

Yes, that was SP2 from windows update. If you install the blocking tool, any options to download the original patches from Windows update?

Guys FYI, I ran into this morning;

You may want to take a look at the MS downloas site. Apparently there are some tools that check for hotfixes/patches, that may need to be re-applied post SP2

For those wondering why Pat is mentioning the IE clip, heres clarification on when you would need to reinstall IE7 (its at the bottom for those who are lazy

"Internet Explorer

You do not need to uninstall Internet Explorer 7 prior to installing Windows Server 2003 SP2.

If you have previously installed Internet Explorer 7 on a computer running Windows Server 2003 with SP1 and are now installing Windows Server 2003 SP2 using Microsoft Update, the downloadable SP2 update from the Microsoft Download Center, or the SP2 update CD, your computer will retain Internet Explorer 7 as expected.

If you have previously installed Internet Explorer 7 on a computer running Windows Server 2003 with SP1 and are now installing the integrated version of Windows Server 2003 SP2 (that is, the full operating system integrated with the service pack), the computer will have Internet Explorer 6 as the default browser in Windows Server 2003 SP2. You will need to reinstall Internet Explorer 7.

Ah - they finally updated it. Originally it said you had to uninstall IE7 first.
