Am I the only one who has noticed this? Lately, when doing Google searches, I find that many (if not most!) of the results are pages which are other search engines or "directories." Useless junk which just clutters up the good results. Any way to stop this new type of spam?

Nope.
(Have you run a good spyware/broswer hijacker detection/eradication program on your machine lately?)

Thanks for the input. I am definitely virus-free. The problem is not that I am redirected to other sites (hijacked) but simply that the results are useless because they are pages which do other (paid?) searches for relevant sites.

Probably the result of efforts to foil what some like to call "deep linking" to pages.

I haven't followed the arguments, but in general I'm not sure what the problem is with links directly to documents aside from broken links resulting from web sites being reorganized or moved.

I have noticed the same issue. I thought that maybe Google was giving in to brash commercialism and giving a higher priority to paid advertisers, but then I'll get some non-sensical match from non-commercial sites as well.

I actually wondered if someone inside of google was selling their scoring rules. Allowing some sites to artificially elevate their rankings.

OK,
I know this is problably a stupid question but what is a blog? In the articles describing what is wrong with google it keeps mentioning a blog. What is a blog?

I must have my head buried in to many books.

blog = "Web Log"

...in short, stream of conscience web-postings, a web-based rant, a daily diary/log of events, or simply verbal diarrhea, depending on the author.
When in doubt, try Webopedia:

Yep, I had a client with the same issue happening. Had me stumped until stumbling along your post and seeing wbg34's reply. I'm jumping on it tomorrow. Thanks wbg34.

I'd believe that if I actually used Windows. Google has real issues lately, I hope that they resolve them soon.

My DNS server is Linux as well. I'm not getting redirected, there is just a lot more trash in the listings now days. I'm usually on the 2nd or 3rd page before I find a truly relavent link. Or I get 5 links for something that should be more common than that.
