This just started to happen. Using Mac G3 with OS 9.2 and Google set as home page in IE 5.1.7. When I start the browser, the address bar shows: and immediately freezes. I thought it might be the communication line between my cpu and dsl, however, the email works fine and all of the applications on the MAC run as usual. It's possible IE 5.1.7 became corrupted somehow, but I can't get around the Google freeze. Help!!? Grateful Kenny.

Thanks Dan ... I thought of that but I can't get onto the web because Google is my start-up page and freezes.

Or use the command line to load a different page.

Cheers,
Dian

I also experienced what KennyRohan experienced, using a G3 running 9.2.2 and an old version of IE. For me the problem began on June 8 and affected only access to Google.com. Access to the web and to other sites is not a problem because Google is not my start-up page. All other web access is normal. When I enter Google.com in IE, however, I experience an immediate freeze and have to reboot. (This also happens when I try to initiate a Google search from other sites.) I have found a work-around using an alternate Google IP. Entering 72.14.207.99 gives me access to Google, which works fine once I'm there. Given that this has happened to others within roughly the same time-frame, it sounds more like a Google problem than a problem with the Mac or with any particular version of IE. I only joined here today. Kenny, how did it work out? And does anyone else have any thoughts? (The problem is still continuing as of today, so my interest in the answer is more than academic.)

What I ended up doing, was to get a fresh copy of IE for the MAC on my PC. I then transferred it to the MAC. I then trashed the version that seemed not to be operating and replaced it with the fresh copy ... restarted the Mac and bingo, everything has been fine since then. KennyR

From about 8 June 2007 until 15 June 2007 google.com searches consistently 'crashed' Internet Explorer (IE) on Macs. This happened every time with IE 5.1.7 on OS 9 and IE 5.2.3 on OS X. The situation for OS 9 was particularly serious as often the OS also crashed.

Early reports indicated that turning off either style sheets or frames, but not scripting, would stop the crashes.

Several people reported that this Google bug could stop IE from opening if it normally automatically opened a home page set to google.com. In cases where IE is the default browser clicking on a safe link in an email etc allows it to open so that the home page can be changed. In other cases dropping an html file onto IE's icon should be adequate.
